Report of Sir John Bayley on 1 individual petition (the prosecutor) on behalf of John Duckworth, tobacconist, convicted at the Lancaster Lent Assizes [1822] for uttering a forged bill (in the name of Shakespear Garrick Sykes) for £65 15s 0d against Jonathan Ball, tobacconist of Liverpool on 29 October 1822. There is a certificate from Richard Bullin, mayor of Liverpool certifying the validity of the prosecutor's signature on the petition. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner is of previous good character, was led astray by another and has a son employed in a reputable occupation who is in great distress. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy -'It is possible Duckworth may have been a Dupe of Hemmingway's = but of that I have no proof'.. Folios 171-176.
