Report of J W Park on 2 collective petitions (27 people of Milverton, Somerset; and 50 people of Wellington, Somerset) on behalf of William Darch convicted at the 'last' Somerset Assizes held at Taunton for arson against William Bond. There are affidavits from William Flood Jnr., John Loosemoore, James Tottle[?], Elizabeth How and Joseph Slade and letters from Paul Warren and Park. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner was of low intelligence and if he had carried out the arson it would have been at the instigation of someone else, evidence in the his favour had not been stated at the trial, and the prisoner has a wife and 4 children to support. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: no mercy. Annotated 'April 17 1822, The law to take its course'. Folios 139-148.
