Report of Lord Ames, David Evans and Rick Vaughan magistrates for the City of Bristol, on 1 collective petition (25 people, including John Miller, the prisoner's father, vicar and churchwardens of Bristol) on behalf of Joseph Millar convicted (with Charles Moody) at the City of Bristol Quarter Sessions held on 13 January 1812 for stealing 2 plated teaspoons, value 1/-, property of James Iles, keeper of the Nelson's Arms public house on 13 November 1811. Evidence supplied by James Iles. There is a covering letter to the petition from Edward Protheroe of Harley Street; and a covering letter to the report from George Merrith, deputy clerk of the peace for Bristol. Grounds for clemency: youth (13 years), the prisoner was of previous good character until Charles Moody led him astray and his father undertakes to watch over his morals in the future. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: mercy. Annotated: to be pardoned and his friends taking care that the convict be placed in proper bonds of order'. Folios 18-25.
