Letter from Thomas Swann, Treasurer, Apollo Lodge, No. 368 [erased], York to James Heseltine, Grand Secretary, Moderns' Grand Lodge concerning small contribution to the Charity Fund due to the infancy of this Lodge constituted the previous year, with list of members including Dr William Spencer, Worshipful Master, surgeon, John Cordley, Senior Warden, wine merchant, Richard Garland, Junior Warden, merchant, Thomas Swann, Treasurer, banker, Malby Beckwith, Secretary, gentleman, Joshua Oldfield, post master, Joseph Braint, merchant, John Lund junior, surveyor, Richard Dawson, surgeon, Thomas Atkinson, architect, Robert Haxby, musician, Thomas Thackray, musician and James Jackman, innholder, with Tylers named as Richard Baines and Thomas Gricewith.

Administrative / biographical background

Apollo Lodge was granted a warrant by the Moderns' Grand Lodge on 31 July 1773 and was constituted on 3 August 1773, meeting at the George Inn, Coney Street, York, Yorkshire. The Lodge moved to William Nicholson's Coffee House in 1776 before relocating to the Merchant's Hall, Fossgate, York in 1781. The Lodge acted as the Provincial Grand Lodge of Yorkshire for many years until its prominence declined in the last decade of the eighteenth century as the significance of Union Lodge, No. 331 [SN 941] grew.
