Apollo Lodge was granted a warrant by the Moderns' Grand Lodge on 31 July 1773 and was constituted on 3 August 1773, meeting at the George Inn, Coney Street, York, Yorkshire. The Lodge moved to William Nicholson's Coffee House in 1776 before relocating to the Merchant's Hall, Fossgate, York in 1781. The Lodge acted as the Provincial Grand Lodge of Yorkshire for many years until its prominence declined in the last decade of the eighteenth century as the significance of Union Lodge, No. 331 [SN 941] grew.
