Official papers of Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, and Robert his son, 2nd Earl, relating chiefly to the former's expedition to Ireland in 1573 and the latter's command in Normandy in 1591, his expedition to Cadiz in 1596, his debts to the Queen and his trial; 1571-1601.
1. "A Breif of the nombre of the garaisons there" (sc. in Ireland), with the chardges thereof for one month"; Michaelmas, 1571. f.1.
2. Account of the proceedings of an English force serving in the Netherlands against the Spaniards, 26 July - 11 Aug. 1572; with news from Flushing, 13 Aug. f. 7.
3. Devisees how the Q. Majesty may have half ye commodities and proffitts of ye Erle of Essex voyage into Ulster, bearyng also half ye charges that are susteaned and shall be by hym susteaned in ye same"; July, 1573 In the hand of William Cecil, Lord Burghley. f. 11.

The vellum covers (ff. 63, 64) contain a deed-poll of Lodowick [Stuart] Duke of Lenox, appointing Raphael Powell, of Upminster, co. Essex, his deputy as Alnager and Collector of Subsidies and Alnage of "the olde as of the new Draperies" in co. Hertford; imperfect and the date cut away.
10. "The names of all her Maiestes shippes and other vesselles, with their numbers of men to serve in warrlyke mannour"; 26 Feb. 1589[90] With estimates of charges, etc. Signed by Sir John Hawkyns, W[illiam] Borough, and B[enjamin] Gonson. f. 65.

Blount, Sir Tho. Gerrard, Sir Conyers Clyfford and Sir Rich. Wingfield; Plymouth, 23 May, 1596. Copy. f.84.
17. List of regiments, with names of colonels and captains and number of men in each company amounting in all to 6300, engaged in the Cadiz expedition; 1596. Besides the regiments of the colonels as above, those of Essex himself and of Sir Horatio Vere are included. f.85.
Followed (f.87) by "A note of the severall dayes that the colonells and captans receaved entertaynment for their companyes", etc.
18. "Newes ... out of Spayne and the Lowe Countries", giving an account of the arrival of the fleet at Cadiz on 20 June and subsequent events to 25 June, derived from Matthew Rye [or Rise], an eye-witness, who reached Bristol on 20 July, 1596. ff.89, 91.
19. Miscellaneous papers connected with the Cadiz expedition, comprising lists of names of soldiers, payments to several companies, etc.; 1596. ff.92-96.
