Robert was born on 23 September 1896, the son of Patrick and Elizabeth Connor of 34 Oxmantown Road, Arran Quay, Dublin, a street on the north side of the River Liffey in central Dublin. He had two older brothers, two older sisters, a younger brother, and a younger sister who died in infancy.

Robert joined the Civil Service as a Boy Clerk in Dublin on 11 January 1913. He was a Temporary Clerk with the Board of Education from 9 January 1915 until 18 May 1915 and was promoted to the post of Assistant Clerk in the Registry Office on 19 June 1915. He then earned £50 a year (the equivalent of about £5,500 today).

Robert volunteered as a private in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on 9 October 1915 (Regimental No. 20481) and transferred to the 2nd Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Regimental number 7003) in 1916.

He died at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen of broncho-pneumonia. His date of death is recorded as 11 November 1918, so he may not have known that hostilities had ceased.

Robert is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen with the inscription on his gravestone ‘Thy will be done O Lord’.

He is commemorated in the book of Irish Memorial Records 1914-18 and on the Department for Education Memorial Plaque, Sanctuary Buildings, London. At the time of his death, his parents are recorded as living at 81 Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin, a little way north of Robert’s childhood home by the river.;
