Title (The name of the record)
-
Letter book of Emanuel Mendes da Costa [(1717-1791) naturalist]: this volume contains original letters from Thomas Pennant and drafts or copies of da Costa's replies. They reflect the writers' interest in mineralogy and mention of their subject matter has only been noticed when other topics have been raised. Pennant was primarily interested in fossils and minerals during the 1750's but by 1762 he had switched his attention to other aspects of natural history such as zoology and ornithology and the correspondence with da Costa gradually faded away, the last letter being written to Pennant in 1780. The final letters in the volume are those exchanged between Richard Pennant Baron Penrhyn and da Costa in the 1780's when the latter made up several mineral collections for his Lordship. Many of da Costa's letters are in the British Library.
