NUT War Record: Sec Sch Bootle, Liverpool

War Illustrated, Vol 9, p 3222 - Portrait

In connection with the unemployed question in Liverpool, Mr James Maddrell, a gentleman well-known in connection with the Liverpool Manx Society, and a member of the Toxteth Bound of Guardians, had been getting into hot water with the Labour Party in the town. Speaking at a recent meeting of the Toxteth Guardians, he declared that much of the talk about lack of employment was all talk, and said that he knew of a firm at the Liverpool docks who wanted 300 labourers, and could not get them. Mr James Sexton, secretary of the Dock Labourers' Union, took the matter up, in the "Labour Notes," which he writes for a certain Liverpool newspaper, and asked Mr Maddrell to visit the docks with him, and show him where labourers were wanted, and could not be obtained. Subsequently, according to Mr Sexton's statement, Mr Maddrell and a fellow guardian admitted that his statement bad been baaed on information which had proved to be incorrect. It would be interesting to know whether Mr Maddrell considers the matter in the same light. (Manx Sun Saturday, 10/12/04 p1)

SILVER WEDDING. MADDRELL - KEGGEN. - At St Clement's Church, Liverpool, on 25th February, 1889. James Maddrell, to Katherine Keggen, both of The Howe, Port St. Mary. (Isle of Man Examiner Saturday, 28/2/14 p1)

The funeral took place at Rushen Parish Church, on Wednesday, of Mr James Maddrell, who died on the previous Saturday, at the advanced age of 88. The deceased gentleman was a native of Glenchass, near Port St. Mary, and followed the sea for the greater part of his life, but had for the past eleven years lived with relatives in Liverpool. He was the father of Mr James Maddrell, baker, a well-known Liverpool Manxman (at whose house he died), and of Mr John Maddrell, a master mariner, sailing out of Liverpool. (Isle of Man Times Saturday, 29/6/18 p5)

The following matters came before Deemster Callow, sitting in the Common Law Division (Testamentary Jurisdiction) of the High Court, at Castle Rushen, on Wednesday of last week :-
Estate of Ann Keggen. - Mr H. P Kelly called James Maddrell of Park Road, Liverpool, who deposed that Ann Keggen, who was his mother-in-law, died on the 26th April, at The Howe, Port St. Mary. The only next-of-kin was his wife and the other petitioner, John Keggen, who resides in Liverpool. The value of the estate was about £200. - A will was produced, one of the witnesses being the late Mr Henry Kelly. - Mr H. P. Kelly swore to his father's signature, and W. Arthur Keggen swore to the signature of the deceased, Ann Keggen. James Maddrell was sworn executor. Estate of James Keggen Maddrell, Lieutenant, Machine Gun Corps. - Mr Kelly called James Maddrell of Park Road, Liverpool, who said that the deceased, his son, was killed in action at Arras on the 23rd April, 1917. He died intestate. The value of the personal estate in the Isle of Man was under £5, but deceased was also entitled to certain real estate. - Administration granted to James Maddrell. (Isle of Man Examiner Saturday, 14/6/19 p3)

One of the best known of Liverpool Manxmen is Mr James Maddrell, of the Dingle, Liverpool and of the Howe, in the Island. His many friends will be pleased to know that his son, Kenneth Taubman Maddrell has just become by examination an Associate of the Chartered Secretaries’ Institute. He is one of four who are successful this year in Liverpool. Mr Kenneth Maddrell has been for some time a teacher of Spanish in Liverpool, having won the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals against all England in that language. Perhaps (adds our correspondant) the Liverpool Manx Society will endeavour to secure the services of Mr K. T. Maddrell for their next programme, and succeed in persuading him to give a paper on one of the many subjects of his study. (Isle of Man Examiner Friday, 13/2/25 p5)

The late Mr James Maddrell of Berkeley Street. Douglas, left personal estate valued at £ 8.000. Executrix. Mrs Ellen Maddrell. (Ramsey Courier Friday, 10/5/46 p2) - his father?
