Gallantry Notes: War Diary 57 Bn 1/9/1918: "On the 1st September 171 Inf Bde attacked Heudecourt with the 2/7 Kings Own at 4.50am. This attack was supported by No 3 Section "C" Coy under 2/Lt EW Barber and No 3 Section "D" Coy under Lt AA Gardner. Considerable resistence was encountered in the S.E.corner in Heudecourt and from Greyhound Avenue. 2/Lt Barber, leaving 2 of his guns just north of the Heudecourt-Bullecourt Road went forward himself with 2 guns. Both he and Sergt Eyles fought their guns at point blank range with great skill and courage. A German machine gun was put out of action at 30 yards range, casualties inflicted on the enemy and time given for the infantry to reorganise on the road. Three of sergt Eyles's team were wounded by snipers.";
