War Diary: ….at 6.15am the Bde advanced across the open for about 2000 yards when it was held up by the enemy in position at Shumran Barracks. Fairly heavy shelling with H.E. Coy HQ with two guns of No 2 section and 4 of No.4 section moved up from Bde Hq in extended order behind 2/9 Gurkhas and came under artillery and mg fire which caused 3 casualties in No 4 section and 8 casualties in No 2 section. Section Officer Lt Blumfield, Sgt Rowley(?) and Ptes Bence and Smith killed and Capt Hardman OC Coy, wounded. This officer died of wounds a few hours later…………..
