The Deeds and PAPERS of the family of ANDERTON of INCE (Wigan) and EUXTON (Nr. Wigan)

On behalf of the Committee I must here record our appreciation of the voluntary work performed by Mr. C. L. Burrows in calendaring the Anderton Deeds and Papers. Mr. Burrows has attended at the Reference Library nearly every day and pursued his self-imposed task with such success that by the end of the year under review, the laborious work of abstracting the thousand documents in the collection was nearly completed. The 80 early deeds ranging from A.D. 1230 to the 16th century, being in abbreviated Latin and written in the strange old scripts of the period, required expert examination and much local knowledge for their accurate reading. Mr. Burrows possessed the local knowledge in ample measure, but his palæographical knowledge was not quite so certain, and I am glad to acknowledge the willing assistance given to Mr. Burrows by Mr. W. K. Boyd, F.R. Hist.S., of Upholland, formerly a State archivist at the Board of Trade Record Department and Editor of the State Papers of Scotland. Our old friend, the Rev. T. C. Porteus, M.A., B.D., F.R.Hist.S., has also freely given advice and rendered assistance, in addition to his voluntary work on the Standish Deeds.

It is interesting to record that what is apparently a second Jacobite cypher has been discovered in the Anderton Papers (Doc. No. 9/17). The significance, of the document has not been determined, but the cypher, which is in Greek characters, has been decoded by Mr. Porteus and will be published in due course. The names of several persons implicated in the Lancashire Plot of 1692-3 are mentioned in the document.
