The Association was a representative body with branches throughout Lancashire, taking action to improve farmers' rights, lobbying parliament, negotiating prices of produce and drawing up codes of good farming practice. It ceased to exist in April 1921 when it amalgamated with the Lancashire branch of the National Farmers' Association. The funds and assets were then placed in the hands of the trustees who met annually to administer the funds and make donations, which were primarily given to agricultural research and educational bodies. The trust was wound down in 1951 after bequeathing many grants and bursaries to various agricultural concerns.
The earliest records refer to the North Lancashire Farmers Association, which changed its name to the Lancashire Farmers' Association in January 1902, when the Ormskirk and District Association merged with it. By 1917 another merger has taken place and the society is known as the Lancashire and South Westmorland Farmers' Association.
