Description

25 demi-official and other items relating to the Haggard family. These include late 19th century commission documents for the 4th Hampshire Artillery Volunteers, 20th Middlesex (Artists) Rifle Volunteers, and the 86th Regiment. Also a citation for a Croix De Guerre earned by Captain C A Haggard Middlesex Regiment attached 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment (18th Division) at Villers Bretonneux, April 1918. With various papers relating to the career of Lieutenant-Colonel B C Haggard, 2nd Battalion Queen's Regiment, including a 4pp ms account of the action at Sidi Barrani, Egypt, December 1940 (4th Indian Division).

Administrative / biographical background

Charles Haggard was commissioned in the 4th Hampshire Artillery Volunteers in 1870, and subsequently transferred to the 86th Regiment in 1872. By 1900 he was Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, and he retired shortly afterwards.

Christopher Amyand Haggard was commissioned in the 7th Battalion Queen's Regiment in 1914, and served in France until wounded in July 1916. Transferring to the Middlesex Regiment he was attached to the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment as Adjutant, and served in France during 1918. During the Second World War he held a civil appointment as a Staff Clerk in the Department of the CIGS.

Bevis C Haggard was commissioned in the 7th Battalion Queen's Regiment in 1914 and served with the unit in France from 1915 to 1917, being wounded three times. He was granted a regular commission with the 2nd Battalion in 1919. He served in India, China and Malta, becoming a Major in 1934, and serving in Palestine 1938-40. As a temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the 2nd Battalion Queens Regiment he served in Egypt 1940-41 and Syria 1941 before being invalided home, where he held an administrative post prior to being invalided out of the service in 1944.
