Mr Gedling is an upholsterer who has been a member of his union since the age of 18 and branch secretary since the early 1930's. The branch was originally the National Amalgamated Furniture Trades Association (N.A.F.T.A.) which became the National Union of Furniture Trades Operatives (N.U.F.T.O.) and eventually the Furniture and Allied Trades Union (F.T.A.T.). He was involved in a number of committees etc. and applied for various organising jobs. These are his personal papers. Union records are in the Lancashire Record Office.
