The Bigods were closely connected with Ipswich, and Earl Roger (d. 1221) was instrumental in acquiring for the town its first charter of liberties in 1200. [GEC ix. 588] Later earls, Roger (d. 1270) and Roger (d. 1306), held a house and a quay in the town.
