The Freebridge Lynn union was incorporated under the 1834 Act, and the union workhouse was built two years later at Gayton.

Freebridge Lynn Union Board of Guardians was replaced by Guardians Committee No. 8 in 1930.

After the abolition of the Boards of Guardians in 1929, the Gayton Workhouse was administered by Norfolk County Council as a Public Assistance institution between 1930 and 1948 and as a County Home between 1948 and 1963. In 1964, the property was sold.
