Photocopies of four ts letters (26pp in total) to his son, December 1937 - November 1938, written during his appointment as Rear Admiral Yangtse with his flag in the river gunboat HMS BEE and mainly describing the progress of the Sino-Japanese War, including Japanese air raids on Nanking, their bombing of the USS PANAY and shelling of HMS BEE and HMS LADYBIRD and their capture of Hankow, and his doubts about the Chinese capacity for effective resistance to the Japanese onslaught.
