Description

United Kingdom: England, southeast coast: Kent: St Margarets Bay to Margate. ‘A Chart of the Downs with the Flats of the North and South Forelands and the Channel into Ramsgate Harbour'. Includes two views: 1) ‘Appearance of Ramsgate with the Mark objects for Sailing to and from the Harbour'; 2) ‘Marks at the Goodwin light’: ‘The tower of St Peter’s Church...’ and 'The Eastmost or Lower Light-house'. Chart shows coastline, hydrography, buoys, preferred navigable channel, topography, vegetation, farms, settlements, fortifications (including Deal Castle, Sandown Castle and Walmer Castle), land marks, sight lines and remarks. Inlcudes ornate cartouche. Printed. North point (orientation to the west) with compass indicator and magnetic north variation (1795). Scale: 4.5 inches to 3 miles.
