The Geological Survey was established on a regular basis in 1856 and the publications fall into three main series. The ''Memoirs'' contain detailed reports of complete surveys or investigations dealing with a particular region or a particular mineral. ''Palaeontologia Indica'' record the results of comprehensive palaeontological research in India and neighbouring countries. The ''Records'' consist of miscellaneous geological papers and the annual reports of the Geological Survey from 1868. A detailed list of the contents of all the series was published as Volume 77 of the ''Memoirs'' (V/20/71)
