Description (What the record is about)
-
Album containing B&W photographs of improvements to the Menai Bridge between 1938 - 1940. Each image is accompanied by a caption detailing the content of the image.
Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, Menai Suspension Bridge connects the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. With the arrival of modern vehicles the bridge's previous weight limit of 4.5 tons per vehicle became an obstruction, so between 1938 and 1940 the old iron chains were replaced with new steel ones, this album details these improvements.
Included are an image showing the general public watching improvements from Caers Pier, dated September 1938. Various pictures showing the stringing of temporary cables and the settlement of Bridge Rope from both sides of the bridge. A view of the Bridge showing temporary cables supporting the deck dated the 13.2.1939. A view from the top of Anglesey Pier looking towards Caerns Pier dated January 1939. Several images showing cars continuing to cross the bridge despite the work that was being carried out, the sign 'Pedestrians This Way' can be seen in an image dated 21.11.1939. Various images showing the erection of anchor plates and chain links from both sides. An image showing workers drilling holes from Anglesey side, dated 13.11.1939. Various views from the Bridge Masters House. An image showing two male workers posing for the photograph amongst deck timbers. Various images of workers showing the drilling of stone for Pier Masonry. Various images of workers demolishing the old deck. -
