Administrative / biographical background

A temporary iron church was erected on a site between the present 21 and 23 St Andrew's Road in 1895 in a newly developed part of the parish of Bedford St Peter. The Bishop of Ely dedicated this building on 22 October 1895. The area became an ecclesiastical district by order in council of 7 May 1915, and the site for the permanent church on the Kimbolton Road was purchased after a public meeting of congregation and parishioners on 19 June 1916. The first part of the permanent church (the two west bays) was finished on 1922, the rest of the nave and the chancel consisting of the old iron church, removed and rebuilt. This building was consecrated on 28 May 1922 by the bishop of St Albans. The whole nave was completed and dedicated in 1930
