Administrative / biographical background

The first furnace was built at Backbarrow in 1711/12 by William Rawlinson, John Machell, Stephen Crossfield and John Oliphant. In 1736 the Newland Company was founded by Richard Ford and Thomas Rigg with the construction of a furnace at Nibthwaite. These two companies were amalgamated in 1818 when the Newland Company took over the Backbarrow Company. The company became part of Harrison Ainslie and Company; then in 1917/18 the company's name changed to Charcoal Iron Company Ltd. The firm was later taken over by David Caird Ltd. ?1919
