The following records were deposited in the Manchester Central Library as Diocesan Record Office in October 1982 by Rev H.G. Thomas, and September 1993 per Bury Archives Service.

Custodial history

St. John's was built in Rock St., by Rev. John Stanley, rector of Bury, on his glebe land, to serve the growing population of Bury, and was consecrated on 8 June 1770.

It was not assigned a District until 1860 when part of the parish of St. Mary's was granted to it by Order in Council 23 January (London Gazette, 25 January 1860).

An attempt to join the parish to that of St. Mark's in 1924-1926 was vigorously opposed (see L110/3/3-7). Part of the parish of Walmersley was added in 1958 by Order in Council 7 May (London Gazette, 13 May).

From 1956 most services were held in the mission church at Seedfield. The old church was finally closed in 1964 and a new one built at Seedfield to replace the mission.

The benefice was united with St. Mark's by Order in Council, 27 July 1983, (London Gazette, 4 August 1983), as St. John with St. Mark, St. John's becoming the parish church of the united parish.
