Administrative / biographical background

This Committee of the County Council was set up 3 January 1891

To execute the powers and duties of the Council under the Weights and Measures Acts, 1878 and 1889, or any Acts amending or extending the same, except the power of making, revoking, or altering any bye-law, and of appointing or dismissing any Inspector.

Previously (from 7 Mar 1890) these functions had been under the GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE.

The C.C. Yearbook 1949/50 gives the functions as

1. To exercise and perform all the powers and duties of the Council under:

i) The Weights and Measures Acts, 1878 to 1936

ii) The Shops Acts, 1912 to 1936

iii) The Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933

[iv) The Control of Bread Order 1951 in the Yearbook 1953/4]

2. To consider reports and to authorise the institution of proceedings on behalf of the Council in respect of offences under the Merchandise Marks Acts, 1887 - 1926.

In 1974 these functions went to the new PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE [Pub. Pro]
