Salt Duty

Richard Heath, master, and Samuel Sanders, mate, of schooner 'Commerce' of Teignmouth, Devon, stated on oath that on 15 Aug. last they shipped 4000 bushels of British fishery salt at Liverpool to carry it to Paul, in port of Penzance, on account of William Chenhalls, fish curer. On 17 Aug. they sailed from Liverpool and arrived at Newlyn on 21 Aug. Off Cape Cornwall the vessel ran into stormy weather, sprang a leak and 130 bushels of salt was lost: Collector of Excise to cancel bond.
