Title

Letter of the Rev Page Godfrey, Kirmincham Hall, near Congleton, Cheshire to Robert Leslie, Grand Secretary

Date

14 February 1803

Description

Letter from the Rev Page Godfrey, Kirmincham Hall, near Congleton, Cheshire to Robert Leslie informing the Grand Secretary about his recent meeting with John Martin, Friendly Brothers' Lodge, Newcastle under Lyme. Seeks advice concerning an examination of a freemason claiming to be the Worshipful Master of a Lodge at Bridge End, Etruria, where Godfrey 'did not suppose them Masons but the new fangled sect of Philanthropists'. Suprised that he has not been informed by the Antients' Grand Lodge of the formation of another Lodge in his local area and requests membership certificates for himself and William Bend of the Marsh, Newcastle under Lyme. Endorsed by Robert Leslie noting correspondence received from members of disbanded Staffordshire Regiment of Militia in Bridge End, Etruria, having removed there from Windsor and also Birmingham [Lodge held in the Staffordshire Regiment of Militia at Windsor, then Birmingham, then Eturia, No. 327(A), SN 1354] and informing Godfrey about necessity of registering Lodge members with the Clerk of the Peace after the Unlawful Societies Act of 1799. It appears likely that the members at Eturia sent a Petition to form a Lodge, Etruscan Lodge, No. 327(C), SN 1422, Eturia in 1803.
