Description

These records are apparently from the offices of Nelson and Hearn, solicitors of Buckingham. They relate to the estate of the Cavendish family of Thornton Hall in Buckinghamshire and Crakemarsh in Staffordshire

Thornton Hall was originally the property of the Tyrell family who in the eighteenth century intermarried with the Sheppard family who owned Crakemarsh Hall. The whole estate passed to Sir Thomas Cotton Sheppard who died 5 April 1848. His heir was his sister Elizabeth wife of Thomas Hart (d.20 March 1848) of Uttoxeter. Their daughter Elizabeth Maria Margaret (b.Feb 1817 d.4 June 1858) married Richard Cavendish (1794-1876) son of 2nd Baron Waterpark in 1841 and through her the estate passed to the Cavendish family. They were succeded by their eldest son William Thomas Cavendish (1843-1878). His son Henry Sheppard Hart Cavendish (1876-1948) was later 6th baron Waterpark. Thornton Hall was sold c.1903

When received the papers were in bundles, general correspondence has been amalgamated. Correspondence with some other firms of solicitors is included
