From December 1943 to October 1944 Shirley was Commandant of an internment camp for Italian civilian Fascists at Fayid in Egypt and from October 1944 until October 1948 Commandant of 380 Prisoner of War Camp, Fayid, housing Austrian and German prisoners of war and other nationals who served with the German forces. Most of the papers relate to the 1943-1948 period of his service, although AWS1 contains some items concerning his (Territorial) service in the ranks of the Oxford Yeomanry and as an Officer with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry between the wars.
