Lalkar v C. S. Chan

This file consists of correspondence and legal papers relating to a libel case brought by Dr Chanan Singh Chan against 'Lalkar' in 1986 following the publication of allegations against him in the letters to the editor column made by individuals in 1984 and 1985.

These papers include correspondence from various solicitors including letters to Avtar Jouhl and the Indian Workers Association concerning the progress of the case, and costs associated with it; letters of apology to be printed in 'Lalkar', in English and Punjabi; discussions relating to an out settlements to be paid to Chanan Singh Chan; photocopy of affadavit by Chanan Singh Chan; writ of summons giving particulars of the alleged libel; copy of 'Lalkar' June 1985; copies of a questionnaire about 'Lalkar' sent to readers which includes questions about their opinion of Chanan Singh Chan following the publication of items about him; 'Lalkar' accounts December 1986 and handwritten lists of donations collected from individuals in Birmingham towards the libel case costs, and subscriptions for 'Lalkar'.
