JAB/1/2 - Ms. diary of a “journey from London to Constantinople by the rivers Rhine and Danube. Septr 1836”. Author not stated / [1 bound vol. with marbled boards].


JAB/1/3 - Ms. re visit to the harem of Rifat Pasha. May 11th 1847. Author not stated / [1 leaf, folded].


JAB/2/1 - Ms. documents - Annotated envelope, & photocopy of letter from Malcolm Deas to Society Director John Hemming, dated 26th February 1986, re: artwork of Colombia (transferred to 1. Map Room, then 2. Picture Library; see X0842) / [1 empty envelope, c.20x15cm; 2 photocopied A4 leaves].

JAB/2/6 - Ts. extracts re Charles Hanson, taken from the Levant Herald of April 1874 / (Sent by Elizabeth Anderson, 14 October 1985) / [4 fs. leaves, stapled].


JAB/2/7 - Ms., single leaf, headed ‘2’ [N.B.: no page ‘1’], describing areas of (now) Istanbul overlooking the Bosphorus from both European and Asian banks. Includes mention of Roumeli Hissar (Castle), Robert College and Bebek on the European side and, on the Asian side, the widowed Sultana’s property and gardens, and the waterside house of the Hansons [as in JAB/2/2 and JAB/2/4]. Access is via the Society's Foyle Reading Room and is free to Members and Fellows of the Society and to those in formal education (proof of educational status required e.g. a student/staff card or formal letter of introduction from your institution). For all other visitors a GBP 10 daily access fee applies. All visitors are required to provide personal i.d. such as a driving licence or passport.

Administrative / biographical background

Ann Cox Brown lived in Turkey from 1841-7 with the Hanson family. Her father, Joseph Brown, was born in London and worked as a merchant and banker in the Mediterranean and South America. He set up a gold mining company in Melbourne in 1852, thence moved to Peru and retired to England in 1867. A talented painter.
