Administrative / biographical background

Paignton National School in Church Street was built in 1829. In 1874 the school was taken over by the newly-formed School Board. In 1875 the Girls School was moved to new premises in Curledge Street, followed by the Boys School in 1885. The Boys School was now known as the Grosvenor. The Infants School remained at Church Street. In 1903, on the dissolution of the School Board, the schools passed to the jurisdiction of the County Education Authority. The Boys School was closed in 1937 and the Tweenaway Boys School opened in the following year. In 1973 the Girls and Boys Schools were combined to form Paignton School.
