For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy broke through the line he was with one of the guns detailed to protect the flank. He twice covered the retirement when the line was forced back, the second time, supported by its infantry, he drove back a number of
hostile infantry and cyclists. When the enemy under cover of some houses made a determined rush, he was the only surviving gun member, and emptied the last belt into them. By his skill and tenacity he was largely responsible for their advance being held up.;
