Administrative / biographical background

These papers, deposited by Messrs Penny and Harward, solicitors, were removed from a linhay in Bampton in 1962. They are the papers of a firm of Bampton solicitors, comprising various members of the Row and Densham families, pre-eminent amongst whom is Edgar P. Row who, throughout the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th, was a constant and central figure in many aspects of local government and activities. Documents relating to the Bampton Sanitary Board, the Bampton Parochial Committee (1044B-1/A/P/3), various local School Boards, the Bampton Poor Law Guardians (1044B-1/A/P/1-2) and the Bampton Urban District Council have all come to us by way of the secretaryship or clerkship of Edgar and Thomas Row, and their influence extended to many other fields of local life such as the Conservative Association, the Co-operative Society and the Nursing Association. In conjunction with an interesting set of papers from local business and tradesmen who were clients of the solicitors, (1044B-1/M/1-23) these combine to give a comprehensive picture of the locality.
