Description

Introduction

From the early 1950s the Revd Bernard Humphreys began to keep a series of journals describing his travels in Britain and Ireland and on the Continent. The journals contain detailed descriptions of the places he visited, together with comments concerning the various establishments where he stayed, and the people he encountered during the course of his travels

Humphreys had a particular interest in architecture and many of the journal entries describe visits to buildings of historic interest. Unsurprisingly visits to churches feature most prominently and, in addition to describing the actual fabric, Humphreys also passes comment on such matters as their state of repair and the size of their congregations

Bernard Humphreys was Curate of St Giles, Lincoln, (1957-1960), Rector of Fiskerton (1960-1970), and Vicar of Middle Rasen and Rector of West Rasen from 1970 until his retirement in 1984. He became a Canon of the Cathedral and Prebendary of Carlton cum Thurlby in 1981, and edited the Lincoln Diocesan Directory from 1960 until his death in 1987.
