The diaries were purchased from Mr A Arbour in July 1995. The Rev Newton Heelas came from a wealthy Reading family. He went to Cambridge University and was ordained in 1891. He became vicar at St Peter's, Norbiton in 1916 and remained until 1937 when he retired due to failing health. The diaries are particularly interesting for the accounts of his foreign travels.
