Administrative / biographical background

Trevor Laker was Sales Director of the John Bull Rubber Co. Ltd. The registration number A1, the first number to be issued by London County Council to Earl Russell in 1903, was bequeathed to him in 1950 by his friend George Pettyt. He retained the number until 1959 when he was about to retire, when he sold it for £2500, the proceeds going to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in memory of his friend.
