These letters and papers concerning the organisation, training and maintenance of the local militia and volunteer corps during the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars were addressed to Earl Fitzwilliam during his Lord Lieutenancy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, 1798-1819. There are a few earlier letters (1794-1797) on related matters, addressed to the Earl either as a private individual or as Colonel of the Yorkshire West Riding Yeomanry Cavalry.
