Inspeximus dated 26 Nov. 1 Edward VI tested by Sir Roger Cholmeley, chief baron of the Exchequer, of Pipe Roll 38 Henry VIII (1546/7) showing that the citizens owed £355. 2 s. 11¾ d. for the fee farm rent of £36 a year for the years 24-32 and 36 Henry VIII (1532-41 and 1544/5), namely £36. 4½ d. (sic) for year 24 (1532/3), £288 for years 25-32 (1533-41), at £36 a year, and £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. for year 36 (1544/5), residue of £36; they have paid £4. 17 s. 4 d. for the year 24 (1532/3) to the lady Catherine, dowager of Arthur, late Prince of Wales, part of the jointure granted to her by letters patent of 10 June 1509; £9. 14 s. 8 d. (being £4. 17 s. 4 d. a year for two years) for the years 25-7 (1533-36) to Queen Anne [Boleyn], part of the jointure granted to her on her marriage by letters patent of 21 March 1534 enrolled on the Treasurer's Remembrancer's roll for the year 26 (1534/5) roll (blank); £9. 14 s. 8 d. for the years 27-29 (1535-38) to Queen Jane [Seymour], part of the grant made to her by letters patent of 3 June 1536; £9. 14 s. 8 d. for the years 30 and 31 (1538-40) to Wimund Carewe, receiver general of her estates appointed by letters patent of 6 Dec. 1538 enrolled on King's Remembrancer's Memoranda rolls roll (blank); £108. 19 s. 2¼ d. (being £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. for 3½ years) for the years 24-27 (1532-36) to Richard [Fox], late Bishop of Winchester, Sir Robert Ratclyff, late Lord Fitzwater and Earl of Sussex, John Heydon, William Paston, Henry Wyatt, Richard Broke, John Norton, Richard Lyster, Robert Wrott, and John Carleton, surviving trustees named in the will of Sir Thomas Lovell (Edward Ponyngs, Thomas Wyndham, John Heron, Robert Blaggs, and Thomas Lovell esq., also named as trustees, having died) on behalf of the legatee Thomas Maners, Lord Roos and Earl of Rutland; £15. 11 s. 3¾ d. (being half a year at £31. 2 s. 7¼ d.) for Michaelmas, year 28 (1536/7) to John Castelman and John Hardham, Robert Bowyer, William Bradebridge, John Molens, Ellis Bradshawe, Austin Cresseweller, and William Lane (trustees for J. Castelman) who had recovered the amount from Sir Robert Ratclyffe and his co-trustees by a writ of entry sur disseisin in le post (enrolled on Treasurer's Remembrancer's roll for 3 Edward VI (sic) roll (blank); £108. 19 s. 2¼ d. (being £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. for 3½ years) for the years 28-31 (1536-40) to the same John Castelman; (Total paid £267. 10 s. 11¼ d.) Remainder £87. 11 s. 11½ d.; a sum of £15. 11 s. 3¾ d. (representing half a year's payment at £31. 2 s. 7¼ d.) is not due; John Castelman by charter dated 18 May 1540 granted his £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. A year to the Mayor and citizens. Pipe Roll of 1 Edward VI (1547/8) showing that the citizens of Chichester owed £211. 3 s. 3½ d., namely £139. 2 s. 7¼ d. for fee farm for that year and arrears; £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. for year 37 (1545/6) part of £36 to be paid through John Dawtre, sheriff for that year; £31. 3 s. 7¼ d. for year 38 (1546/7) part of £36 due to be paid through John Sakevyle, sheriff for that year; £9. 15 s. 5¼ d. outstanding on roll of 38 Henry VIII; they have paid to John Castelman £202 (being £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. for 6½ years from 34 Henry VIII to 2 Edward VI) they still owe £8. 16 s. 4 d. which is to be paid in the year 2-3 Edward VI through John Scott, sheriff. And they are quit. Exemplified at the request of John Dygons, (Name inserted in another hand.) late Mayor of Chichester.
