Description

Dock and Harbour Engines (13 items).

Two single-acting engines, with 48 inch cylinders, 8 foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams.

Reverse plan of the engine house showing both engines and wells, longitudinal section of engine house, cross-sections of the engine house and bottom of both wells, plan of the boiler house and cross-section of boilers, longitudinal section of boiler; sketch of pumps for Sheerness and Chatham Dockyards; press copy plan and section of the engine house (original sent to John Rennie). The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: coloured drawing of steam valves by J. Seaton, 26 Nov. 1830; sections of boiler by J. Atkins, 14 Apr. 1840; exhaust pipe - tracing by J. Mitchell, Officer in Charge, 23 Dec. 1847; exhaust pipe for 14 horse engine and milling tools - tracing by J. Mitchell and S. [?], Feb. 1848; eduction (exhaust) pipe, eduction pipe for 14 horse engine, milling tools - original and reverse drawings, Feb. 1848.

For the Honourable the Commissioners of the Navy. Pumping engines, Sheerness Dockyard. The engines were ordered along with the two 14 horse independent engines in 1813, but the first, AA, was not delivered until 1817, and the second, YP was delivered in 1823. The Sheerness engineers referred to these engines as 50 horse engines, although the nominal horse power was 49.1.
