Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume MM7 is the seventh in the series of thirteen 'MM' volumes, which covers various preferments, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents, Messrs. Cluttons, Messrs. Smith & Watkins and Messrs. Smiths & Gore. The preferments in this volume include the following: the London Bishoprick Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 30 December 1868 by vacancy; the London St. Paul's Chapter Estates commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 September 1871 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 13 August 1872 by Order in Council; London St. Paul's Precentorship Estates published in the London Gazette on 1 March 1867 by Order in Council and on 6 January 1886 by vacancy; and the Norwich Bishoprick Estates on 25 March 1864 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 12 July 1864 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Norwich Bishoprick Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 25 March 1864 (date effective), which was published in the London Gazette on 12 July 1864 and then subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Bishoprick Late Permanent Estates on 1 July 1949 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 1 November 1949.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Middlesex, parishes of Hornseyand Finchley; the county of Essex, parish of Horndon on the Hill; the county of Hertfordshire, parish of Bishop Stortford; the county of Norfolk, parishes of Horning, Catfield, Ludham, Walcott, Ridlington, Happisburgh, Twyford, Foulsham, Wood Norton and Bintree.
