Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume MM10 is the tenth in the series of thirteen 'MM' volumes, which covers various preferments, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Messrs. Smith & Gore, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Milles, jennings, White & Foster. The preferments include the following: the Bishopwearmouth Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by agreement on 18 July 1867 (effective), which was published in the London Gazette on 9 August 1867 by Order in Council; and the East Dereham Sinecure Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 1 October 1872 by vacancy; Fens Chapel Trust Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Fen Chapels Act 1875 (38 and 39 Vict. cap. CLXXII); Handsworth Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Handsworth Rectory Act 1891; the Kirkby in Cleveland Sinecure Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1971 by vacancy; the Leverington Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Leverington Rectory Act 1870 (33 & 34 Vic. C. CLV); the Newington St. Mary Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the St. Mary Newington Act 1869; the Winwick Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Winwick Rectory Act 1884; Burnley Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the [Burnley Rectory Act 1890/91] (53 & 54 V. cap. CXXIII); the Sutton Coldfield Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under the Sutton Coldfield Rectory Act 1907; and the Clapham Rectory Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 24 January 1908 by vacancy under an Order in Council dated 26 October 1906.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Durham, parish of Bishopwearmouth; the county of Norfolk, parishes of East Dereham and Hoo; the county of Essex, parishes of Chapple [Chapel] or Pontesbright [Pontisbrigh] and Little Tey; the county of Staffordshire, parish of Handsworth; the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Kirkby in Cleveland and Sheffield; the county of Cambridgeshire, parish of Leverington; the county of Montgomeryshire, parishes of Llanbrymnair [Llanbrynmair] and Darowen; the county of Lancashire, parishes of Manchester, Winwick, Burnley, Whalley, Walton on the Hill, Childwall, Liverpool, Leigh and Wigan; the county of Surrey, parishes of Newington St. Mary, Walworth, Clapham, Battersea and Lambeth; the county of Wiltshire, parish of Wroughton; the county of Warwickshire, parish of Sutton Coldfield; the county of Suffolk, parish of Ipswich St. Margaret; the county of Kent, parish of Woolwich St. Mary; and the county of Middlesex, parishes of London Old Street St. Luke and London St. Giles without Cripplegate.
