Description (What the record is about)
-
Full-leather album, 360 x 485 mm, containing mounted prints with letterpress captions. The title and a floral border are stamped in gold on the front cover. A label on the inside front cover reads: 'Presented to the India Office Library by the Rt. Hon. the Earl Kitchener of Khartoon [sic] on 1 October 1959', however the album was actually presented by his son Lord Kitchener. A small label on the same page reads: 'Bound at the Caxton Works, Bombay'. The photographs mainly depict views of the river front at Varanasi but include architectural studies and views from the Buddhist stupa at Sarnath. Forty of the forty-one prints are duplicated in Photo 10/6 in the Reading Collection. There is an additional copy of this album at Mss Eur E267/189. Note on dating: Several prints in the album date back to at least 1883. Prints 7, 8, 11–13 also appear in Photo 177, an album dated January 1883. A number of other views are probably also of this period.
