408. James Milner, London. Oct. 1808. 4 items.
14 horse power crank engine. Engine never built?

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 595. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 102.

For James Milner. Calendering works, London. The engine appears never to have been built. John Rennie wrote on 27 Jul. 1808 saying that he expected an order from Mr. Milner, and sent particulars of the works and a sketch of a shaft on 8 Oct. Boulton Watt & Co. sent him the originals of these drawings on 14 Oct., and John Southern opened Book 595. On 17 Oct. Rennie wrote saying that he had received the drawings, but that there was no need to rush to send the engine until he had sent a written order. He also thought that some enquiry should be made about Milner's responsibility. The order was either never confirmed or Milner's finances proved too unstable, as the engine appears never to have been built. The Catalogue of Old Engines erroneously ascribes these drawings to Milner & Whitaker of Thurlstone, near Wakefield [see Portfolio 5/335].
