Description (What the record is about)
-
In 1738 Richard Puxty, tanner sold a house described as since divided into 3 dwellings, near the churchyard of St Johns, with garden, orchard etc to Thomas Sergison of Cuckfield Place. On his death in 1766 it passed to Anthony Nott and Charles Langford. The latter died in 1783 leaving the property to his wife Jane who married George Hickes of London. Anthony Nott died in 1790 leaving his share to his sons Sergison and Anthony, and Jane Hickes died leaving hers to her husband with remainder to her friends Fowler Hickes and George Trimley. In 1795 the whole property was sold to Thomas Mantell, cordwainer and John Weller, grocer, who mortgaged it to John Tourle of Landport, gent and further to William Cooper in 1797. After the death of Thomas Mantell in 1807 it passed to his wife Sarah and son Thomas who with William Cooper sold it in 1810 to Amon Wilds who then transferred the mortgage to George Stanford, builder in 1812 in trust for Charles Wille. Wille then in 1834 sold the property, now with 2 houses lately erected on the south east part to William Huggett, baker. On his death in 1853 it passed to his son Walter who sold in 1857 to William Beck, it now containing 4 cottages, described as 1-4 Lancaster Street. He died in 1876 leaving the property to his wife Anne who died in 1893. It passed to Charles, her son who died in 1915 and his heirs Henry, Frank and George sold to Arthur Reuben Jenner, builder in 1923.
