Title
COMMENTARY ON THE BOOK OF REVELATION
Date
1659-1667
Description

An inlargement of the sober guess concerning the meaning of the mistycall visions of the Revelation of St. John. Together with some explanatory notes upon Mathew 24. November 11th 1664'. Attributed to Edward Waple (1647-1712), who owned this book. Waple matriculated at St. John's, Oxford, 1663 and graduated BA 1667. He was a prebendary of Wells from 1667, Archdeacon of Taunton 1682-1712, Vicar of St. Sepulchre's, London, 1683-1712, and a Canon of Windsor 1690-1712. He was President of Sion College in 1704. Waple was the author of 'The book of the Revelation paraphrased : with annotations on each chapter, whereby it is made plain to the meanest capacity ...' (London, 1693); however the text does not correspond to this manuscript. pp. i-xi. Flyleaves. Inserted as p. i. is a note concerning Waple and attesting his authorship of this manuscript by comparison with his hand in his printed books, citing a copy of 'Kabbala denudata', vol 1, 1677, with Sion College shelfmark C.IV.9. [now quarto series A70.1/C11; but now lacking the flyleaf inscribed by Waple]. pp. xii, 1-490. 'An inlargement of the sober guess concerning the meaning of the mistycall visions of the Revelation of St. John'. At p. 487 is a note: 'September 11th anno Dom. 1665. Finis'. Inserted as pp. 284e and 305a are pen and ink drawings of the seven-headed beast with ten horns, each crowned. In the drawing at p. 305a the beast is ridden by a figure labelled 'Rome'. pp. 491-526. 'Some explanatory notes upon Christs propheticall sermon preached to his disciples, Math. 24 v. 1,2,3'. At p. 526 is a note: 'Finished Feb. 25 1666'. pp. 527-537. Blank. Attached to p. 527 are two leaves written in another contemporary hand offering corrections to the text of pp. 1-490. pp. 538-577 (paginated from the other end of the book). Commonplaces, arranged under various headings ('De superbia', 'de viris', 'de mundo' etc), written in another hand, seemingly the oiginal owner of the volume. At p. 538 are inscriptions: 'Ex libris Samuel Pe.. pret. 4s 6d Jan 23 1659' and 'June 7 1660 F. P.'
