9 William Pix, the elder, clothier, Robert Glasier, clothier, Richard Ashenden, weaver, and Henry Foster, clothier, all of Hawkhurst, with many others unknown assembled, arrayed in warlike manner, at the instigation of William Pix, on 3rd September, 1599, and riotously broke and entered the dwelling-house of William Chapman of Hawkhurst, brickmaker, at Hawkhurst, and took and carried off 21 measures of oats, worth 17s. 4d., a flock bed, worth 20s., a chaff bed, worth 4s., a blanket, worth 6s., a coverlet worth 2s. 6d., two chaff bolsters, worth 3s., a frying pan worth 2s., a "tubbe" worth 2s., a keeler worth 2s., two platters worth 12d., a saltcellar worth 3d., a woman's petticoat worth 10s., and 6s. 6d. in money, the property of William Chapman, contrary to statute concerning riots.
At this session the four accused appear by Herbert Cadman, their attorney, ask to hear the indictment and having heard it say that it is insufficient in law, plead not guilty and put themselves on the country. John Webbe, gentleman, clerk of the peace, prosecutes. Writ of non omittas........ quin venire facias to summon a jury for session at Canterbury on Tuesday before St. James the apostle next [22nd July, 1600]. On which day the defendants and John Webbe appear but none of the jury. Therefore postponed to Tuesday before Michaelmas next [23rd September, 1600] at Maidstone. Sheriff to have the jury there and the same day given to John Webbe and to William, Robert, Richard and Henry.
[10] Thomas Waller, knight, and George Ryvers, esq., justices of the peace, on 31st August, 1599, at Pembury, by their warrant directed to Thomas Cutcheman of Tonbridge, yeoman, constable of the hundred or lowy of Tonbridge, ordered him to convey George Rodway, a vagabond, to the next officer, and so to Berkshire; but Thomas Cutcheman refused to obey the warrant, contrary to statute.
At this session he comes by Herbert Cadman, his attorney, pleads not guilty, and puts himself on the country [process as above].
[11] John Sharvoll of Sundridge, labourer, on 1st September, 1599, at Sundridge, assaulted Joan Brightred, wife of William Brightred.
