Immediate source of acquisition

Deposited in the East Sussex Record Office in June 1970 by Messrs. Strutt and Parker, 201 High Street, Lewes, land agents and surveyors, and transferred to the West Sussex Record Office in June 1975.

Administrative / biographical background

John Crofts, a London attorney, purchased the manor of Sompting Abbotts in 1748, and the estate was extended in 1836 when the Reverend P.G. Crofts purchased the manor of Sompting Peverel. The Crofts estates were retained intact into the present century, and passed, by marriage, into the Tristram family.
