Gloucestershire Parish Deeds

12th century -1928

An artificial collection of title deeds relating to various parishes within the county.

Each deed is given a parish number (these are the City Library numbers, not identical with those used in the Record Office) and a sub-number, e.g. D2957/41/1 identifies the first deed in the batch for Berkeley. A list of parish numbers follows this introduction.

The calendar falls into four parts, due to changes in its original format. There may be entries for a parish in each of the four parts.

Part 1: Originally in two large volumes, copied on A4 paper by G.R.O. At end: abstracts of title (marked 19919)

Part 2: Originally typed on 6" x 4" index cards, copied onto A4 paper by G.R.O.

Part 3: These calendar entries were still in manuscript form in 1974 and have been typed by G.R.O. staff. In many cases the handwriting was difficult to read and not all queries were checked against the original document. There may therefore be errors, particularly in the spelling of place-names. This part of the calendar cannot be relied upon for accuracy; if it is important, please check the original document.

Part 4: This list gives the numbers of those deeds in the collection which have not yet been calendared

Parts 1, 2, 3 have been indexed, by subject, place-name and personal name. Part 4 is represented as a finding aid.

Deeds transferred from the City Library, Gloucester

The collection was formed from deeds given by a number of different donors, and in many cases original bundles of related deeds were split up and arranged according to parish. For the most part it is impossible to tell the provenance of a deed, but where the donor's name is known, it appears on the calendar entry.
