Administrative / biographical background

Born 24 Sep 1820, the son of Reverend Philip Gell and his wife Elizabeth (nee Dod). He studied at Trinity College Cambridge. He was ordained as a deacon in 1843 and become a fellow of Christ Church, Cambridge, where was a lecturer, dean and assistant tutor, 1849-1861. He served as a chaplain to the Bishop of London, 1859-1861. He was appointed Bishop of Madras in 1861 and remained in that post until his retirement in 1898. He stayed on in India until he died at, Culford, Coonoor, Southern India on 25 March 1902.
