Concerns: T. Gisborne's account of a bonfire at Derby attended by the 'lowest sort'; Sir R Burdett's concern that all in the riot should be 'disfranchised'; the Duke's attempt to get to the bottom of the accounts he has heard of a matter in Derby by writing to Gisborne for a full account; the resolution of the squabble amongst the justices without violence; the resolution of the squabble resulting in Mr Bagshaw and Mr Cheatham paying back the money raised to the treasurer and the constable of the High Peak Hundred and the keeper of the House of Correction not meddled with; monthly meetings of the justices to be fixed by towns at Bakewell, Tideswell and Castleton; Mr Thornhill's adjourning of the debate in the sessions house; his not objecting to Lord Hartington's request about Hampton Court; an update on the pleasantness of country life. Written from Chatsworth. Signed 'Devonshire'.
